Anna Hursey and Tom Jarvis: The Real Test Begins Against Japanese Seeds at WTT Champions Macao 2026

Anna Hursey opened the 2026 WTT Champions Macao with a 3-0 win over Leong On Na, but the result was dictated by rankings: world No. 37 vs a No. 475 wildcard. Hursey conceded only 14 points and won the opening game 11-1, yet the win offers little diagnostic value for the next test. She meets world No. 3 Miwa Harimoto in the last 16; the gap is 34 places, but recent Harimoto games show small openings. In the men's draw, Tom Jarvis (No. 45) faces Sora Matsushima (No. 3), a 42-place gap and another severe challenge. The event is the second tier of WTT behind Grand Smash, worth around 1,000 points for the champion; both British players are underdogs. Japan's generational talent system has produced teenage elites Harimoto and Matsushima, and their speed and spin create a different level from Hursey's first-round opponent. The key is whether Hursey and Jarvis can compete in moments under pressure, not whether they dominate weak opposition. A close loss would be more useful than a blowout as they build toward the 2028 Olympic cycle.
