National Vovinam Championship 2026: Nguyen Van Hung wins 70kg gold, but my data notebook points to a different champion

On August 14, 2026, National Vovinam Championship final: Nguyen Van Hung defeated Tran Quoc Khanh 3-1 in the men's 70kg category. While spectators praised Hung's decisive throw, data quietly told a different story. Hung attacked only 12 times and landed 7 (58.3%); Khanh attacked 23 times but landed just 5 (21.7%). This article argues that Vietnamese Vovinam training and selection methods rely too much on subjective aesthetics rather than efficiency metrics. Using historical data from over 1,200 matches, I show that counter-attacking fighters similar to Hung win 62% of national finals, a sign that Vovinam needs a statistical revolution before the next SEA Games.
